Ina Garten Candied Yams

Candied yams are a classic side dish made by baking sweet potatoes or yams in a rich glaze of butter, sugar, and spices. Ina Garten’s version elevates this traditional dish with simple yet elegant ingredients, making it a must-have on your table.

Ingredients

  • Yams (sweet potatoes): 4 large, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds.
  • Unsalted butter: 1/2 cup (1 stick), melted.
  • Brown sugar: 1/2 cup, packed.
  • Maple syrup: 1/4 cup.
  • Ground cinnamon: 1 teaspoon.
  • Ground nutmeg: 1/4 teaspoon.
  • Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon.
  • Salt: 1/2 teaspoon.
  • Pecans (optional): 1/2 cup, chopped.

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the oven

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 2: Prepare the glaze

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk until smooth.

Step 3: Assemble the yams

  • Arrange the sliced yams in a single layer in the prepared baking dish. Pour the glaze evenly over the yams, ensuring all pieces are coated.

Step 4: Bake the yams

  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil, stir gently, and bake for an additional 20–25 minutes, or until the yams are tender and caramelized.

Step 5: Add pecans (optional)

  • If using pecans, sprinkle them over the yams during the last 10 minutes of baking for a crunchy topping.

Step 6: Serve warm

  • Remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm and enjoy!
