Ina Garten Pan-Fried Onion Dip Recipe

Ina Garten Pan-Fried Onion Dip

This dip features thinly sliced yellow onions, pan-fried until golden and sweet, then blended into a creamy base made from cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Seasoned simply with salt, pepper, and a touch of cayenne, it’s a classic party favorite that’s anything but ordinary.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened

  • ½ cup sour cream

  • ½ cup good-quality mayonnaise

Instructions

Step 1: Caramelize the Onions

In a large sauté pan, heat the butter and oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, pepper, and cayenne (if using). Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 25–30 minutes, until the onions are deeply golden and caramelized. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

Step 2: Blend the Creamy Base

In a mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Beat with a hand mixer or whisk until smooth and well blended.

Step 3: Combine and Chill

Fold in the cooled onions. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 4: Serve

Serve chilled or slightly cool with potato chips, crackers, or raw vegetables.
