Ina Garten French Onion Dip Recipe

Ina Garten French Onion Dip Recipe

French Onion Dip is a classic party dip made with sweet, caramelized onions mixed into a creamy base of sour cream and mayonnaise. Ina Garten’s recipe enhances the flavors by slow-cooking the onions to bring out their natural sweetness, creating a dip that pairs perfectly with chips, vegetables, or crackers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, enhances caramelization)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a slight kick)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Caramelize the Onions

  • Heat butter and olive oil: In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil together.
  • Cook the onions: Add chopped onions, salt, and black pepper. Sauté for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized.
  • Enhance flavor: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, sugar (if using), and cayenne pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  • Let it cool: Remove from heat and allow the onions to cool completely.

Step 2: Prepare the Creamy Base

  • Mix the ingredients: In a large bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, and softened cream cheese. Whisk until smooth.

Step 3: Combine and Chill

  • Fold in the onions: Mix the cooled caramelized onions into the creamy base until well incorporated.
  • Chill for best flavor: Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy

  • Garnish with chives: Sprinkle fresh chives on top for added freshness.
  • Serve with dippers: Enjoy with potato chips, crackers, or fresh-cut vegetables.
